BIG BROTHER RETURNS TO ITS ROOTS WITH LIVE SHOWS AND 24/7 STREAMING

The wait is almost over! Big Brother Australia is officially returning to Network 10, and producers are promising a back-to-basics revival featuring live nominations, live evictions and 24/7 streaming – just like the show’s classic years.

In an exclusive preview, TV Tonight was invited to attend the final round of auditions and speak with Executive Producer Sarah Thornton and new host Mel Tracina. The result? A fascinating look inside the new era of Big Brother – one that blends nostalgia, risk-taking and raw, unscripted reality.

Thornton revealed that the new lineup is one of the boldest yet: “There is one housemate that is an incredibly risky choice,” she teased. “We’re taking a big risk as TV producers, but I think people will love them. It’s like if you hopped on a bus and looked around — it’s a group of people you’d never normally see living together under one roof.”

She went on to describe the cast as spanning four decades in age, from the youngest in their 20s to one with grandchildren, and hailing from across WA, SA, QLD and NSW. “We’ve got really big characters. Some are totally larger-than-life. There’s a 23-year-old virgin, a bachelor in his 30s who’s never had a relationship and showers five times a day, and even a young man who believes we should live like it’s the 70s — where women are homemakers and men come home with fish and chips. It’s a real cross-section of Australia.”

Host Mel Tracina adds that the housemates will truly represent modern Australia.

“Twelve housemates enter the house at launch,” she confirmed. “It’s a real cross-range of Aussies — different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles. We’ve got clean freaks, an ex-pro surfer, an MMA fighter and a single mum. It’s going to be fascinating to watch how they gel.”

DREAMWORLD RETURNS

The new house and live stage have been constructed inside Dreamworld, giving visitors a chance to see the set up close.

“It’s really embedded within Dreamworld, and it’s beautiful,” said Thornton. “We’re close to the rides, so there’ll be some noise spill – but we’re okay with that. This year’s show should feel raw and real. People who come to Dreamworld will be able to see, touch, and feel Big Brother like never before.”

LIVE REALLY MEANS LIVE

Network 10 has confirmed that opening night on Saturday 8 November will be pre-recorded “as live” to create the premiere episode airing Sunday 9 November, but from then on, it’s the real deal – with live nominations, live evictions and a live grand final.

“Yes, nominations and evictions will be live,” Thornton confirmed.

The 24/7 live stream will launch straight after the premiere, with a short delay for moderation.

“It’s on a delay for defamation and classification reasons,” explained Thornton. “We’ve worked really hard on what the live stream will be. It’s for super-fans who want to get to know the cast intimately and watch unscripted, genuine moments overnight. We want it to add value, not just shock.”

While there won’t be a full return of Big Brother Uncut or Friday Night Games, there will still be plenty of cheeky moments and Friday night excitement.

“There’s no Uncut — the live stream reflects the main show’s values,” said Thornton. “You’ll see flashes of people hopping into showers and so on, but that’s not the focus. There’s also no Friday Night Games, but we do have something planned that fans of that era will love.”

HOSTING HER BIGGEST SHOW YET

For Mel Tracina, stepping into the role of host is a dream come true.

“I grew up watching Gretel Killeen and Sonia Kruger,” she said. “I’ll be bringing my own personality to the show — coming at it as a super-fan who wants all the tea and wants to ask the questions fans are yelling at the screen.”

Her biggest fear? The same thing that excites her most.

“Live TV,” she laughed. “That’s what I’m most nervous about — and most excited for.”

BEHIND THE SCENES

Thornton confirmed that every inch of the house is monitored, even if not every camera feeds to broadcast.

“For duty of care we have cameras everywhere, including toilets, but those feeds aren’t seen by production unless needed for safety,” she explained.

Housemates will enter lockdown roughly five days before launch, and while the total season length hasn’t been confirmed, the pace will increase toward Christmas.

“We’ll up the pace towards the Final, definitely,” said Thornton. “But we want to make sure the house is still full enough that viewers feel like they’re helping decide the winner.”

Thornton added that time-zone challenges are being addressed so viewers across Australia feel equally connected.

“I’m working on a really nice Christmas present for Queensland,” she teased. “It’s tricky, but we’re planning access points for everyone.”

“ONE OF THE BEST CASTS WE’VE EVER HAD”

“This is one of the best casts I’ve ever delivered on a show,” Thornton concluded. “At its heart, Big Brother has always been about the housemates. They’re watchable, lovable, and they’re going to bring brilliant entertainment.”

Mel Tracina added that launch night will feature a few surprises from Big Brother himself.

“I’ll be out the front of the house welcoming the housemates in,” she teased. “Big Brother’s got some secrets up his sleeve, and I can’t wait for people to see it all unfold.”

Big Brother Australia launches 7 PM Sunday 9 November on 10, with the live stream commencing immediately after. Daily episodes continue 7:30 PM Monday to Friday.
